Tapping into the Value of Mentorship

In case you’re new around here, the Infinity Academy is a Moko program where we train our staff to become better leaders as they grow into various leadership roles in their careers and other aspects of their lives.

As part of the program, the trainees have recently been paired with mentors who help them grow into the kind of leaders they aspire to become.

We caught up with Fabian, a mentee, and these are his thoughts about the Infinity Academy mentorship program.

What’s the best part about being an Infinity Academy mentee?

It’s a safe space that’s not self-compromising. You can really open up and talk about the things you’re trying to improve on. You then receive honest and no-nonsense guidance on how to facilitate this growth. I also love how knowledgeable and insightful my mentor is.

What’s the toughest part about being an Infinity Academy mentee?

The mentorship sessions allow me to own up to the things I’m failing at or would like to improve on. However, that also means accepting responsibility for the initiatives required to achieve this improvement. The latter is the scary part because I’ll think — what if I fail?

For example, I have a habit of procrastinating and even sharing that makes me anxious. On the bright side, the mentor acts as an accountability partner as I work on my procrastination. That motivates me to work on the new habits since I also don’t want to look incompetent.

What are the key lessons you’ve taken away from your mentorship sessions so far?

One great lesson that I’ve learnt is how to delegate with ease. I managed to get a cool tip from my mentor — simply convey to the other person that you see them as an expert in their field and you would like their help moving the project forward. I use this all the time now, even with my girlfriend hahaha!

The lesson actually came in handy recently. When we bought table saw machines, I used this hack to ask the suppliers to install the machines. Mind you, this is not a service they offer; they only sell and deliver the machines. In the long run, this helped us to cut down the installation cost and ultimately increase the capacity of our product development and prototyping team.
